Why? Legacy

from Kurt Heaton to grandchildren

internet blurbs and materials given to me by Gary Heaton(descendant of Nathan Columbus Heaton)on my family and your family history

my great, great grandfather was Samuel Heaton, born 1811

HEATON Joseph Heaton and his wife, Mahitable Eastman, lived in St. Lawrence County, New York, around 1810. Children of this union believed to include Samuel Heaton, born 1811; William Heaton, born 1817; Martha Heaton born about 1822; Sarah Heaton born about 1829 and Lurinda Heaton, born about 1830. By 1840 this family had emigrated west to Iowa, but I am trying to track down their exact location

rewrite of introduction to heaton family(printed page from Centennial  Highlight and History of Agra, Kansas(I have this book)
Samuel Heaton and his wife, Rebecca Poet Heaton along with their three sons, Jim(my grand father James Heaton), Frank(Benjamin Frankin Heaton), and Lum(Nathan Columbus Heaton) and Sam’s brother Will and his wife migrated to Kansas in 1872, lured by the Homestead Act.
The HomeStead Act of 1862 allowed each 21 year old to claim, improve for 5 years and then own 160 acres. One square mile of land has 640 acres.( note the map Crystal Platt, they added some acres)
They first stopped in Plum township..........

my great aunt
NEWSPAPER OBITUARY - (date and newspaper unavailable) - Ann Heaton, only girl in a family of six children, daughter of Rebecca and Samuel Heaton,e cows. They arrived at a farm on West Cedar Creek, north of Gietna on September 1, 1873. They homesteaded this place in Crystal Township where they lived for many years. Nine children were born to them, four boys and five girls. h. Her own mother had led her to the alter when she was 14 years of age. She became a member of the Methodist Church and was faithful and true to the end, a period of over 70 years.

The MATTESON-HEATON Cemetery is located 10 miles north and 1 mile west and then South 1 plus miles

Note much of the Heaton land was lost during the dust bowl of the Great Depression(1930s).  My father’s sister, Ellen Heaton married George Gale and their children and grandchildren still own and farm the original homestead of Samuel Heaton)

You might be interested in the fact that Darren Gale(my cousin and yours) was the starting safety for Kansas State in 1982 and we purchased season football tickets for the next 30 years.  Darren Gale played quarterback at Agra High School and led them to a 9-0 season in his senior year. He also held the Fort Hays high school tournament  single game basketball scoring record with 45 points.

I have have copies of the Heaton family Bible entries on births, deaths, marriages

Of interest is Rebecca Poet. She married three Heaton brothers. She married James Heaton in 1840 and he died in 1842. She married Alonzo Heaton in 1844 and he died in 1848. She then married my great, great grandfather, Sammuel Heaton in 1849

from an ancestory site  Mary Matteson post

  1. Samuel Heaton was my 3rd Great-Grandfather. Great to find this information. Do you know how accurate the information posted by Mary Matteson is? I have seen this post from her before, but have the Eastman family on the Heaton side, not the Poet side. But, siblings married siblings, so it is a possibility.

  2. Hi Kurt. I just wanted to say hello. I was recently looking through a book that my Aunt Susan Sarchet Ditson gave each of her Nephews. It seems you have information on the Heaton side that started in New York. I would be interested in reading more or seeing any pictures you may have. Happy new year.
